High Court decision puts a temporary hold on some planned fishing bans in New Zealand.

A High Court decision to put a temporary hold on some planned fishing bans in New Zealand has left the country’s smallest and rarest dolphin, the Hector’s dolphin, and also the critically endangered sub-species, the Maui’s dolphin at risk from accidental capture in nets.

While some of the fishing bans, which have been designed to protect the Hector’s and Maui’s dolphin and are due to come into place on 1st October will go ahead as scheduled, other have been postponed by a High Court ruling, as it has been claimed that they are too wide ranging, and ban fishing in areas that aren’t home to the dolphins.

A spokesperson for WDCS said: “We are deeply saddened that these incredibly vulnerable dolphins will not receive the protection sought for them by the New Zealand Government, and we are deeply concerned that more of these animals will die in fishing nets before the bans come into full effect.”

WDCS, together with other NGOs, will continue the campaign to achieve better protection for these dolphins.  Your support will helps us to keep this campaign strong....
